You've articulated something here that I've felt since I read the book "Generation Kill" a year or so ago. The book documented the first 30 days of the Iraq invasion as conducted by the elite Marine division who were the "tip of the spear." It occurred to me then that if these guys were the Iraqis' first contact with American culture, the Iraqis must have been terrified at what was to follow. As you say in your article, it doesn't matter how lofty your foreign policy sounds. If the guys who are charged with carrying it out are nothing but immoral grunts, it will only amount to oppression and abuse.
