A poem for the second week of Advent. A poem for Love.
Last night I lit a candle
and watched it burn for Love
in the windowsill.
It burned
while sirens screamed
on Main Street in my town
–a violent sound.
It burned
while pastors prayed
for weak structures
to keep us safe
–from earthquakes.
It burned
while women wept
and reckoned with
the secrets that were kept.
It burned
while families seeking refuge
walked through wars
unceasing.
It burned
while hate was speaking
out its fear,
and grief was growing
ever near.
Last night I lit a candle
and watched it burn…
I watched it burn for Love
in the windowsill.
