John, the Contemplative Theologian
John 8 and the Perennial Challenge of the Sanhedrin-Pharisees:
Truth and its Fragments by Ron Dart
Professor Ron Dart gives his fifth lecture in a series of lectures titled John: Contemplative Theologian. In this lecture, Dart expands his discussion on the challenge of interpretation and the tendency for humans to form Sanhedrin's who strenuously defend a given interpretation, often times to the peril of the essence of the tradition itself. Hence, there is a need for a degree of humility in our given interpretation that finds a middle way between relativity and certainty. Dart couches the lecture in the Greek word used for truth in this context, aletheia (ἀλήθεια), and contrasts it with the Greek word used for stone in this context, lithos (λίθος), to illuminate the message of unconcealing and openness to Being.
