Before Tolkien 4: Tolkien, Wager & SIEGFRIED – Ron Dart
Video 1 – THE RINGS OF TOLKIEN & WAGNER – Similarities & Differences
Ron Dart discusses the common themes shared by Richard Wagner's Opera, "The Ring of Nibelung" and J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." Ron notes the allure and perils of the ring, the two dragons, and how both Brunehilde and Arwyn set love as a greater good than even their own immortality. Dart then discusses differences, particularly in how Tolkien's series ends with a comedic or happy outcome while Wagner after the climax explores the tragic in the Nordic tradition of Ragnorok.
Video 2 – WAGNER'S SIEGFRIED
Ron then considers "Siegfried," the third part (or Act 2) of the four music dramas that constitute Wagner's "Ring of Nibelungen."

“You’re not a ‘pacifist,’ are you?” — by Brian Zahnd
“You’re not a pacifist are you?” I get that question a lot. People who have read my books or heard my sermons will often “confront” me with that question. There seems to be a hint of scandal implied in the question, like asking, “you’re not...

Salt in Soup – by Fr. Michael Gillis

The Father-Son Fear-Not Covenant – by Caleb Miller
If we are going to speak of 'covenant' in our day and age, we must be certain that it be rightly framed through the lens of covenant between Father and Son. You see, the Father does not have a covenant with you, rather, He has a covenant with His Son. This...

The Stream: a Parable – by Steve Bateman
The Stream Once there was a young boy who went walking and came upon a small creek bubbling down a hillside. It appeared to form a large and fast flowing stream rushing into the valley where it disappeared in the distance. The boy, being thirsty, dropped to his knees...
